How teachers are using technology at home and in their classrooms- Mining Pew

Purcell, K., Heaps, A., Buchanan, J., & Friedrich, L. (2013, February 28). How teachers are using technology at home and in their classrooms. . Retrieved June 9, 2014, from http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2013/Teachers-and-technology

The teachers surveyed in this report are Advanced Placement and National Writing Project teachers.  This survey documents teachers and teens use of technology and the factors that contribute to their overabundant use of the internet to find information.

Now more than ever teachers are relying on technology to encourage their students to learn.  Teachers are using e-readers, iPads, iPods, cell phones, internet, blogs and wiki to help their students be successful in this ever changing technology age.  Younger teachers are more capable and confident to rely and use new technology compared to older teachers.

Some teachers feel that their students are more knowledgeable in the use of technology and devices. Several teachers in the study have accepted ideas or suggestions from their students regarding the use of technology and tools.

A factor I found interesting was that yet again income has a role in deciding children's ability to get information and resources including accessibility to technology.  Teachers at higher income schools felt that their students were able to acquire information easily, use technology effectively and have resources readily available as compared to teachers in lower income schools who feel that their students suffer due to the lack of resources.

  1. Maybe it's because I'm "old," but I've read several things that say that younger teachers are no different than older teachers when it comes to their willingness to use technology in the classroom. I think that some teachers feel like they need to know every possible glitch that could occur, and so many just don't take the time to experiment and let their students experiment as well.
